Hawaii Volcanoes National Park covers 333,000 acres on the Big Island, and this land is characterized by a massive spectrum of landscape, from lava rock to tropical rainforest. Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano on earth and Kilauea, a volcano still active as recently as this year, are two incredible and surreal sights to behold. Due to the volcanic forces at play here, this park is constantly changing over time.<\/span><\/p><p>During our visit to Hawaii in the Summer of 2021, after visiting Haleakala National Park in Maui, we traveled to the Big Island to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.<\/p><p>Our flight landed in the late afternoon, and we began our three hour drive from the Kona Airport to the park, arriving late that evening.<\/p><p>After a good night&#8217;s sleep, we awoke to tackle Hawaii Volcanoes, starting our journey that day a the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/kvc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kiluea Visitor Center<\/a>.<\/p><p>After obtaining some information and learning some more about the park, we embarked from our destination for the morning, the Kiluea Iki Trail.<\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alltrails.com\/trail\/hawaii\/hawaii\/kilauea-iki-trail-and-crater-rim-trail?u=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KILUEA IKI TRAIL<\/a> (4 miles roundtrip, 2.5-3 hours, MODERATE) &#8211; When the Kiluea Crater erupted in 1959, several lava flow episodes occurred, including that which formed a lake of lava now known as Kiluea Iki (Little Kiluea). From the Kiluea Iki Overlook, the Kiluea Iki Trail leads 400 feet from the rim into the crater where visitors can explore as they hike across. wonders of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-94c31e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/day-hike-nahuku.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thurston Lava Tubes<\/a>, which were incredible. It was almost like hiking in a lava tube cave.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d8be734 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" into the Kiluea Crater, and we all really enjoyed the chance to hike through an actual volcanic crater.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element remainder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/craterrimtour.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crater Rim Drive<\/a>, and on to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/planyourvisit\/ccr_tour.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chain of Craters Road<\/a>. Our drive along the Chain of Craters Road was so interesting, as we\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped over 3,700 feet in elevation on our way toward the coast.
